Thursday, July 31st, 2008

What do you call it, Otaku diplomacy? First the Japanese government declares manga and anime important national exports and “diplomatic tools”, and now it hosts the world championship in dressing up like anime and manga characters.
To be judged by a panel of anime-related celebrities, the finals are scheduled for August three in Nagoya.

Kung Fu Panda, the manga

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Well here’s something you don’t hear very often… an American product being exported into Japanese comics, rather than the other way around.
The hit computer-generated animated flick Kung Fu Panda was recently adapted into a manga and released in Japan.
Now if that manga gets picked up in the States, what would you call it?

The largest anime/manga convention in the United Kingdom is set to start off on August 8, 2008 (triple eights, for the superstitious folk out there).

New Doraemon film and trailer

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I love Doraemon, I do. I used to catch the late-night reruns and just laugh, all alone in the silence of a sleeping house.

Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Uch? Kaitakushi (Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s How Space [...]

The text [...]

Is the live-action Dragonball a fake film?

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Okay, so there’s supposed to this live-action film adaptation of the classic Dragonball anime series. It’s on IMDB and all. It just so happens that there are no photos, posters, trailers, leaks, news or anything. Google searches will net you a plethora of fan-made stuff, this mock-up poster on the left included. But so far, [...]

Highbrow periodical notices anime

Friday, July 18th, 2008

The latest issue of high-falutin’ academic journal Animation: An Interdisciplinary Journal included not one, not two, but three separate anime-related scholarly papers. Imagine that, those university types. Hopefully this is a sign that intellectuals can start taking anime as seriously as an other type of film making.
The published papers include “Star-Spangled Ghibli: Star Voices in [...]
